Most people tend to just walk into a store, pick the first sleeping bag they see, and expect it to be exactly what they need for camping trip. This is an incorrect way of thinking and could possibly cost you a bunch of money. The truth is sleeping bags nowadays are designed differently based on what you will be using them for. Lucky for you, I have done the research, all you have to do is read on and I will list three common types of bags and what they are recommended for.

Three Season

This is the most common type of sleeping bag on the market. They are designed for use in the Spring, Summer, and Fall, but most of them can only safely be used in the summer. Check the temperature rating before you buy. If it is above 0 degrees Celsius (32 F), only use it during the summer. Temperature ratings below zero can safely be used in the spring and fall. These bags typically come in the rectangular shape you normally associate with sleeping bags.

Double

If you are comfortable sleeping in the same bag as your camping partner, I would highly suggest picking up a double sleeping bag. With the added body heat from another person, you stand to be a lot warmer than if you both had individual sleeping bags. Of course there are also the added intimacy benefits for couples, but I’m not touching that, sorry.

Four Season

The last type I will be talking about is the four season bag. In case you already haven’t figured it out, four season means they are designed for winter use. Another name for these bags is “mummy bags”. They got this name because they look exactly like ancient Egyptian sarcophagi. This design is intentional. Heat escapes more easily through your feet and head, so these bags are narrower at the feet and come with a hood. This, plus added insulation make these bags perfect for the hardcore winter campers out there. They are also useful for hikers who prefer to sleep under the stars. The added insulation will protect you from the wind and anything else a tent otherwise would.

In conclusion, when you are browsing for the right sleeping bag for camping, don’t just pick one randomly and expect it to work. You need to take the time to choose the right one if you want your outdoor adventure to be successful.
