Grilling fish on a portable BBQ grill is one of the basic outdoor cooking and survival skills you should learn before going camping. When you’re in the wilderness and you have an insufficient amount of pre-packaged food, your next best source for much-needed protein would be fish. It’s great that you’ve got the fishing skills to catch them, but you’ll need additional skills to grill fish properly if you want them to be tasty as well.
The first thing you should know is that there are certain fishes that are more suited for grilling. If you want to put your portable BBQ grill to good use, try catching fishes that can offer thick, juicy, and sumptuous flesh like classic favourites such as salmon and tuna. Mahi-mahi and sword fish would work well, too.
If you’re amenable to cooking whole fish then you should also look for striped basses, red snappers, and trout.
Unfortunately, fish that are too tender or easily break up won’t be easy to grill. This type of fish includes but isn’t limited to catfish, tilapia, and flounder. You can still use your portable BBQ grill to cook them, of course, but you’ll probably have to rely on the foil grilling method.
To grill fish effectively, you need to make sure that your grill is sufficiently warm or heated before placing your fish. It doesn’t matter if you’re using an electrical, charcoal, or gas grill. Its grates must be hot by the time you toss your fish on them.
When there’s enough heat, your fish will immediately be seared and which will then seal the juices in quickly and properly. The flesh will also become pleasantly firm.
As mentioned earlier on, you can also wrap your fish inside foil packets. It’s obviously more time-consuming to cook this way, but this method also allows you to add in vegetables into the packet before sealing it and heating it up on your portable BBQ grill.
